MECH Student MakerSpace

The MakerSpace in KAIS1180N is a self-serve workspace, accessible after-hours for our students, featuring fabrication equipment including 3D printers, and abrasive waterjet cutter, sheet metal cutting and forming equipment and equipment suitable for cutting, drilling and shaping wood and plastics.

The MakerSpace has 3 distinct work areas:

Light fabrication workbench area with wood and plastic cutting and sanding equipment and hand tools.

The Print Shop 3D printing room with two sizes of FDM printers.

The Abrasive Waterjet Cutter room.

Access to the facility is controlled via UBC Secure Access fob reader that students activate with their student card.

The 3D print Shop and Abrasive Waterjet Cutter rooms are controlled with additional fobs.

Each area is monitored by Campus Security surveillance cameras.

Students undergo orientation and self-study training supported via the Canvas course MECH Student Machine Shop Training. This is a self enrollment course that hosts downloads for software needed for waterjet cutting and 3D printing as well as videos for operating and troubleshooting various pieces of equipment.

Use of the MakerSpace and supplies provided is free with the exception of abrasive water-jet cutting: users are expected to pay costs at $1/minute for university-related activities (coursework, research, APSC engineering student teams) and $1.50 for personal use and to report usage via the posted QR code link at the cutter or via the Quicklink on our website. Please note that the funding that subsidized water-jet cutting for undergraduates during 2022W has now expired, so we are no longer able to offer free use.

Technical staff will periodically replenish supplies and service equipment for the MakerSpace, however it will help if users report issues below:
